Not all lighting has to be bright to be effective. There will be some places in your garden that will be well served but a more subtle and understated light. Most of the ambient lighting needs to be softer to achieve the desired effect. Whether it is rope lighting or subtle spot lighting ambient lighting should be on the weaker side. Some safety lighting can also be muted. For example, pathway lighting need only illuminate the path and the area for your feet. Other types of lighting need to be better. All steps and stairways should have fairly bright illumination and all doorways need sufficient light to find keys or to identify visitors. Security lighting needs to be the brightest type of garden light to be effective. However, security lights are also the best type of light to be activated by motion detector devices. The addition of a motion detector activation device will mean that neither you nor your neighbors are bothered by a bright light shining all night.
