Your dream backyard space may not be something that you've seen in a magazine or in anyone else's yard for that matter. This is the beauty of the patio space, it can be an area where you go to truly give yourself the ability to create an oasis all your own. Think about what you'd like that space to embody for you. It is an ever changing and evolving concept that takes into account your personal preferences regarding outdoor living.
If you read and investigate the type of patio designs that are available, think in terms of how you and your family will use your space. You don't want to get too hung up on the idea that it must look a certain way. There are plenty of patio cover designs that are simple, yet give the homeowners much joy and a sense of relaxation. Others are truly palacial-type backyard estates, where entertaining and weddings could be held. Some of these types of patio designs are budget-related and others are simply a matter of the homeowner's type of outdoor living preferences.
When it comes to a discussion about proper patio living, you can't expect to be done until you've covered the notion of shade. After all, how can you sit for long periods of time outdoors, in the intense summer sun, without shade? The point is you can't. So, what are your options? There are many. Some include things like umbrellas or canopies that can be set up and moved around more easily. They do take up more floor or ground space, so they are not ideal for larger areas. In this regard, the awning or overhead shade sail could be used. These can often be retracted when not in use giving you a much more flexible way of providing a shaded are beneath which you can sit and enjoy your time.
If you like the more traditional look of a patio cover like the pergola, for example, now we are in the realm of permanent patio structures. These are also elements of landscape design as they become part of the hardscape of your backyard space. These make for great features and are flexible in their own right.
With these patio structures it comes down to more of a building sense. These are often constructed or at least assembled. Typically, wood is used, but they could just as easily be made of a composite material and even metal. In fact, composites are becoming more popular as they require much less maintenance than wood. Then, there are always the considerations of how your patio floor will look. You can use pavers or any variety of concrete, slab or stamped, if you want to give your patio cover a bit more of a finished look.
