If your home has a patio, chances are you've thought about adding a patio awning at one time or another. An awning is one of the best ways of protecting yourself from the glare of the sun as well as keeping the heat to a minimum. It can also be used for decorative purposes as they come in a number of designs and styles. If your patio doesn’t have a covering an awning is a good solution. Before you go to the store to purchase one it will be best to know the different types of patio awnings so that you will have an idea as to what to look for.

There are two primary types of awnings: permanent and retractable patio awnings. Both types offer their own benefits. If you choose to buy a permanent awning you will have a permanent covering that does not need to be adjusted on a regular basis. You can be assured that the awning will be stable as long as it is installed properly. It can also be designed as an extension of the roof or an added decoration to the exterior of your home depending on the awning you choose. However, once you have the permanent awning installed you will not be able to easily uninstall it without making some major adjustments. The retractable awning, on the other hand, can be rolled up when not in use. This type of awning is more flexible since if you don’t need shade you can simply retract it. It will also not significantly effect the exterior of your house. These awnings can be installed easily and are simple to roll up and down. In fact, you can even purchase an awning with a motor so you can adjust your covering with the press of a button. The fabric used for retractable awnings is usually tarpaulin, but there are also some retractable awnings that are made of vinyl in the form of a valence design. The only disadvantage of the retractable types is that because it can be retracted it is more prone to wear and tear, therefore it has a shorter life span than the permanent awning.

Before you decide to purchase a patio awning make sure that you know what you want and base it as much as possible on what your patio requires. It will also be best if you measure the area where you are going to install the awning so that you will be able to purchase the right size.
